Seagate Unveils 90TB+ Hard Drives Using New Multi-Layer Technology
- Seagate has demonstrated new dual-layer granular media technology that enables hard drives with capacities over 90TB
- The technology stores data in multiple layers on the drive platters instead of just one layer
- Simulations show the media could potentially enable drives with 3 or 4 layers, boosting capacities over 120TB
- Seagate aims to be able to store 10TB per platter by 2030, up from 2.22TB today
- While SSDs are faster, hard drives still beat them on capacity and the mechanical movement is “really cool”
