Texas forms new council to oversee state agency use of AI, ensure responsible policies
- Texas has created a new 7-member Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advisory Council to review how state agencies are using AI tools and make policy recommendations
- The council heard from several agencies about current and planned AI initiatives, like TxDOT's pilot program for AI incident detection to improve road safety
- The Teacher Retirement System said they are just starting to look into AI but would never use it to make decisions, only to augment human decision-making
- By July 1, all Texas agencies must submit reports detailing any automated decision systems they are using or developing
- The council will review the reports and make a summary and recommendations to the legislature ahead of the 2023 session that starts in January
