AI tool called RETFound can diagnose multiple health conditions from retinal images using self-supervised learning.

Retinas offer a window into health as they are the only place to directly see the body's smallest blood vessels.

RETFound was first trained on 1.6 million unlabeled retinal images to learn normal retina features.

It was then trained on a small set of labelled images to identify disease patterns.

Researchers hope groups worldwide can adapt the publicly available model for their patient populations.
