Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill Opill to Hit Store Shelves Nationwide in March
-
America's first over-the-counter birth control pill, Opill, will be available in stores and online nationwide starting late March 2023. It does not require a prescription.
-
Opill will cost $19.99 for a 1-month supply and $49.99 for a 3-month supply in stores. Online it is $49.99 for 3 months and $89.99 for 6 months.
-
Reproductive health advocates welcomed Opill but said more needs to be done to ensure equitable, affordable access and coverage of birth control options.
-
Opill contains the hormone progestin which works by blocking sperm from the cervix to prevent pregnancy. It's 98% effective.
-
The arrival of over-the-counter Opill comes as reproductive rights are a hot issue amid state abortion bans and the Biden administration's attempts to expand access.
