Ampere launches alliance to take on Nvidia's dominance in AI chips

Ampere launched the AI Platform Alliance to challenge Nvidia's dominance in AI chips and systems. Members include Cerebras, Graphcore, and other AI chip startups.

The alliance aims to promote open, efficient, and cost-effective AI solutions as an alternative to Nvidia's closed ecosystem and power-hungry GPUs.

Initial focus is on hardware interoperability and common form factors to enable deployment. Longer-term goals include open AI models and software stacks.

Nvidia has 75-90% market share in AI chips/systems. Alliance hopes wider availability of alternatives will chip away at dominance.

Noticeably absent are Intel and AMD, who also aim to challenge Nvidia with open software and hardware initiatives. Alliance says they are welcome to join.
