Maryland Lawmakers Propose Requiring Disclosure of AI-Generated Political Ads
-
Maryland lawmakers have introduced bipartisan legislation (HB 872) requiring disclosure when political ads use deepfakes or other AI-generated content. A similar bill was introduced in the state Senate.
-
The bill would require clear labels when campaigns or other entities use synthetic media in political ads within 90 days of an election.
-
There are First Amendment concerns around regulating political speech, so the bill makes exemptions for parody/satire and doesn't outright ban deepfakes.
-
6 states have already passed laws related to disclosure of deepfakes in political ads. Texas and Minnesota ban them outright before elections.
-
The first hearing for the Maryland House bill is expected on Tuesday. Supporters argue transparency is needed as deepfakes spread misinformation.
