Family of Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt files $30M wrongful death lawsuit over her shooting
-
Ashli Babbitt's family filed a $30 million wrongful death lawsuit against the federal government over her shooting death during the Jan. 6 insurrection.
-
The lawsuit alleges Babbitt posed no threat when she was fatally shot by Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd while attempting to break into the House speaker's lobby.
-
Byrd was previously cleared in an internal investigation and said he shot Babbitt to protect members of Congress.
-
The lawsuit contends Babbitt was "ambushed" by Byrd and gave no warnings before shooting her.
-
The suit was filed by conservative group Judicial Watch on behalf of Babbitt’s widower and estate.
