Study Finds Carcinogen Benzene in Popular Acne Creams with Benzoyl Peroxide
-
Testing company Valisure found high levels of the carcinogen benzene in several popular acne treatments containing benzoyl peroxide.
-
Valisure says benzene forms from benzoyl peroxide breaking down over time when combined with other substances. Levels were highest when samples were heated.
-
Products tested included Proactiv, Clearasil, PanOxyl, and store brands from Clinique, Target, Walgreens and Walmart.
-
While long-term benzene exposure causes leukemia, the health risk from using these products is unknown. Benzoyl peroxide has been used in acne treatment for over 60 years.
-
Alternatives are available, including salicylic acid products. Consumers should talk to their doctor about whether to avoid benzoyl peroxide treatments.
