House of Lords Votes Down UK-Rwanda Refugee Deal, Dealing Blow to Sunak's Plan
-
The House of Lords voted against ratifying the UK's refugee deal with Rwanda, dealing a blow to Rishi Sunak's plan. The vote was 214 to 171.
-
The vote came after a parliamentary committee unanimously recommended not ratifying the deal until protections for refugees are fully implemented.
-
Opponents argued the government has not provided evidence showing Rwanda is a safe country for refugees.
-
The vote is non-binding but if the House of Commons voted the same way it could delay implementation of the deal.
-
The government still aims to get flights to Rwanda going this spring despite the setback.
