Boeing Fails Third of Safety Audits After 737 Panel Loss; Whistleblower Found Dead
- Boeing failed 33 out of 89 audits in a recent FAA examination of the company's operations, with a total of 97 points of noncompliance identified
- The audit was prompted by a January incident in which a panel blew off a Boeing 737 Max 9 plane during an Alaska Airlines flight
- Boeing supplier Spirit Aerosystems also failed parts of the FAA audit, including one instance of mechanics using dish soap to lubricate a door seal
- The audit found "systemic quality control issues" at Boeing, which the FAA says requires real and profound improvements from Boeing's leadership
- John Barnett, a Boeing whistleblower who publicly doubted the company's production standards, was found dead by investigators this week from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot
