Bolsonaro Supporter Sentenced to 17 Years for Role in Jan. 8 Brazil Government Building Riot
-
Brazil's Supreme Court sentenced a Bolsonaro supporter to 17 years in prison for participating in the Jan. 8 riot at government buildings. He is the first to be sentenced.
-
The man was filmed wearing a shirt calling for a coup and praising other rioters who stormed the buildings.
-
Nearly 1,500 people were arrested for the riot though most have been released.
-
The rioters refused to accept Bolsonaro's election defeat to Lula and stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and presidential palace.
-
Some justices implied the Lula administration let its guard down, allowing the invasion. Others rejected those claims.
