Over 20 Countries Apply to Join Expanding BRICS Alliance

Following 2023's expansion to include 6 new countries, 20 more countries have applied to join the BRICS alliance in 2024. The countries were not named.

This year, invitations were extended to Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, Argentina, and Iran. However, Argentina rejected the invitation.

Anil Sooklal, BRICS Ambassador, said over 20 countries formally applied and expressed interest in joining. He said this affirms BRICS' role in championing emerging economies.

Among the potential new member countries are Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Cuba, Ecuador, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Thailand.

Nigeria and Pakistan had already expressed interest in joining BRICS in coming years.
