Buttigieg Pledges Federal Funding to Rebuild Collapsed Baltimore Bridge, Reopen Port
-
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says there will be additional federal funding to remove and rebuild the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. More money may require Congressional approval.
-
A cargo ship crashed into the bridge last week, causing it to collapse into the Patapsco River. The port has been closed since, impacting jobs and supply chains.
-
Crews have started removing steel wreckage from the bridge to hopefully open a restricted channel and get more vessels moving. There's no timeline yet for fully reopening the port.
-
Divers have paused searching for 4 missing construction workers due to unsafe water conditions. They'll resume when it's safe.
-
Rebuilding the bridge will take time. Buttigieg expressed optimism Congress could support funding in a bipartisan way like it did for the 2021 infrastructure law.
