Camera companies add Verify tech to combat AI image generation
-
Camera companies like Nikon, Sony, and Canon are adding "Verify" watermark technology to photos to combat AI-generated images. The tech embeds tamper-resistant signatures with metadata like date, time, location, etc.
-
A group including news orgs, camera makers, and tech companies launched the Verify site to check image authenticity for free. Images with digital signatures will display credentials.
-
Sony plans to expand lineup of compatible cameras with signature tech and lobby others to adopt it too. Firmware updates coming to Sony pro mirrorless cameras this year.
-
Canon intends to release a camera with built-in verification technology as early as 2023.

Some companies are also looking at ways to identify AI-generated images, like Intel analyzing skin color changes and Google adding invisible watermarks.
