External TPM Sniffing Attack Can Steal Some Windows Laptops' BitLocker Keys
- Exploit works by sniffing the communication between a laptop's TPM chip and other hardware to steal the BitLocker encryption key in plaintext
- Mainly affects laptops with discrete, external TPM chips rather than integrated "fTPMs" which are more common now
- Similar exploits using external sniffing devices have been demonstrated before
- Many modern consumer Windows laptops use fTPMs and are not vulnerable
- High-end and older business laptops still sometimes use discrete TPM chips and may be affected
