Counterfeit solar eclipse glasses recalled in Southern Illinois over safety concerns
-
Solar eclipse glasses sold on Amazon and at retailers in Southern Illinois were recalled for potentially failing safety standards. The glasses were labeled "EN ISO 12312-12022" but should be "12312-2".
-
Viewing the eclipse without proper eyewear can cause irreversible eye damage in seconds. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing.
-
There's no way to visually detect whether eclipse glasses are counterfeit. Check if the manufacturer is on the American Astronomical Society's approved list.
-
Legitimate glasses should not allow you to see anything through them except an orange glow. Don't use sunglasses or smoked glass.
-
If reusing 2017 eclipse glasses, inspect for scratches, tears or bends. Undamaged glasses may be reused. Attach proper filters to telescopes, binoculars and cameras.
