Conservatives Accuse Liberals of Stifling Debate on Winnipeg Lab Security Breach Involving Scientists Dismissed for China Ties
-
Conservative MP Michael Chong is accusing the Liberals of shutting down debate on the Winnipeg lab security breach involving two scientists dismissed for working with China.
-
The scientists, Dr. Xiangguo Qiu and Keding Cheng, were fired from the National Microbiology Lab after a CSIS report said they intentionally shared information and worked to benefit China.
-
The Conservatives brought forward a motion to have the CSIS director and other officials testify about the scandal, but the Liberals, with NDP support, voted to end debate.
-
The Conservatives say there needs to be more investigation into why the scientists were able to work secretly with China and how the government responded.
-
The RCMP is still investigating the matter while the Chinese embassy denies China tried to steal Canadian secrets.
