Contra Returns to Its Run-and-Gun Roots, But Nostalgia Only Carries So Far
- Instantly reconnects with the run-and-gun arcade games of youth, but also feels a bit underwhelming due to little evolution
- Remake of original Contra with same characters, levels, and general gameplay, but some additions like new playable characters and 2D stages
- Story additions with voiced characters detract from the fast-paced action rather than enhance it
- Core run-and-gun gameplay remains largely identical to previous Contra games, so lacks major surprises although tweaks like weapon upgrades add minor variety
- Solidly scratches the Contra nostalgia itch but runs out of steam quickly across its short runtime with few standout moments
