Ethiopia Fills Controversial Nile River Dam Despite Objections From Egypt and Sudan
-
Ethiopia announced it has completed filling its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River.
-
Egypt and Sudan fear the dam will reduce their share of Nile water and wanted Ethiopia to delay filling it.
-
At full capacity, the GERD could generate over 5,000 megawatts of electricity for Ethiopia.
-
Egypt condemned Ethiopia's announcement as "illegal" and said it would impact negotiations between the countries.
-
The dam has been a source of dispute since Ethiopia began the project in 2011.
