FBI Informant Charged with Lying About Biden Ties to Ukrainian Company
-
An FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, was charged with lying about ties between Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, and a Ukrainian energy company called Burisma. He falsely claimed the Bidens were paid $5 million each by Burisma.
-
Smirnov told the FBI that a Burisma executive said they hired Hunter Biden to "protect us, through his dad." Republicans demanded the FBI release the unredacted form documenting these allegations.
-
Prosecutors say Smirnov lied about the timing of his contacts with Burisma executives, claiming it was during the Obama administration when actually it was after Biden left office.
-
Smirnov repeated some false claims and promoted a "new false narrative" when interviewed by the FBI again in September 2023, after claiming he met with Russian officials.
-
Smirnov was arrested in Las Vegas and faces charges of making false statements. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
