Metrolink Awarded $1.3 Million to Test AI Safety System to Prevent Train Strikes
-
Metrolink was awarded $1.3 million to develop an "intrusion detection system" to alert train operators about obstacles on tracks using AI or sensors. This aims to improve safety and prevent train strikes.
-
The system will help validate hazards like trespassers, vehicles, objects, and debris. It builds on Metrolink's existing Positive Train Control (PTC) safety system.
-
The technology will be tested along a 1.5 mile section of track in Van Nuys that has had issues with copper thefts and track intruders. If successful, it could be expanded to other rail lines.
-
Metrolink has seen a 39% increase in vehicle and pedestrian rail strikes from July to December 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. Most were ruled suicides.
-
Along with technology, Metrolink is working with law enforcement and communities to increase patrols, remove encampments, and connect people to mental health resources.
