IEA Predicts Peak in Emissions by 2025 as Solar and EVs Transform Energy System

The IEA predicts global emissions will peak by 2025 as clean energy transforms the system by 2030. Solar and EVs provide "hope for the way forward."

The IEA projects 10x as many EVs worldwide by 2030 compared to 2023. In 2020, 1 in 25 cars sold was electric vs. 1 in 5 in 2023.

By 2030, solar will generate more electricity than the entire US power system currently does. Renewables will reach 50% of the global electricity mix.

For the first time, the IEA sees fossil fuels declining to 73% of supply by 2030, with emissions peaking in 2025.

Stronger climate policies are still needed to limit warming to 1.5C, which is "possible but very difficult" per the IEA.
