Consultant Uses AI to Imitate President in Misleading Robocall
-
A political consultant named Steve Kramer admitted to sending out an AI-generated robocall imitating President Biden to discourage Democrat voters before the New Hampshire primary.
-
Kramer hired a New Orleans street magician, Paul Carpenter, to create the fake Biden audio using AI voice software ElevenLabs.
-
The robocall was sent to over 20,000 people and was the first major use of AI to imitate a president to suppress votes.
-
Following the call, authorities opened investigations and lawmakers proposed bills to make such AI impersonation illegal and increase fines.
-
Kramer previously worked on Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips' presidential campaign, but Phillips denied any knowledge of Kramer's involvement in the robocall.
