Malaysia Grants Partial Pardon to Former PM Najib, Reducing Jail Term for 1MDB Role
-
Former Malaysian PM Najib Razak had his jail term reduced from 12 years to 6 years by the Pardons Board. His fine was also reduced to an unspecified amount.
-
The partial pardon comes after Najib served less than 2 years of his sentence for his role in the 1MDB scandal. He could be released as early as August 2026.
-
The Pardons Board met on January 29th, one of the last official acts of the outgoing King Sultan Abdullah before he stepped down. An official announcement by the Board is expected.
-
Najib still faces several other charges related to 1MDB. His lawyers are seeking to dismiss a money laundering case or apply for an acquittal.

Najib applied for a royal pardon just days after beginning his sentence in August 2022. His lawyer filed a new application in December, leading to the pardon decision.
