Raw Milk Cheese Company Pleads Guilty After Listeria Outbreak Leads to Illness and Death
• Former raw milk cheese maker Johannes Vulto and his company Vulto Creamery pleaded guilty to charges related to a deadly listeria outbreak from 2016-2017.
• Listeria bacteria was repeatedly found at the Vulto Creamery facility between 2014 and 2017.
• Vulto Creamery issued a full recall of its soft, wash-rind raw milk cheeses in 2017 after they were linked to 8 hospitalizations and 2 deaths.
• Listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria bacteria, is especially dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
• The former U.S. Attorney said Vulto and his company's unsafe practices led to an "entirely preventable tragedy" of illness and death.
