Germany's 2023 CO2 Emissions Hit 70-Year Low Due to Renewables Surge
-
Germany's 2023 CO2 emissions were the lowest in about 70 years, according to a new study. Emissions dropped by 73 million tons from 2022.
-
The decline was driven by increased renewable energy production, which accounted for over 50% of electricity generation for the first time.
-
Coal-fired electricity production fell to its lowest level since the 1960s, cutting CO2 by 46 million tons.
-
Industrial emissions also dropped 20 million tons due to production cuts stemming from high gas prices.
-
But the study estimates only 15% of the reductions represent permanent CO2 savings. Significant further investment in renewables is still needed.
