Google Resumes Allowing Multiple Speaker Groups After Sonos Lawsuit Setback

Google is bringing back the ability to add Nest speakers, Chromecasts, and displays to multiple groups in the Home app. This was disabled last month in response to a Sonos lawsuit.

Sonos sued Google in 2020 for infringing patents related to managing groups of speakers. A jury ruled in Sonos' favor in May and fined Google $32.5 million.

A judge recently overturned the jury verdict, ruling that Sonos' patents were unenforceable. Sonos plans to appeal.

Despite Sonos' appeal plans, Google has rolled back the grouping restrictions introduced last month.

The Home app update enabling multiple groups is rolling out now on Android and coming soon to iOS.
