Google Restricts Gemini Chatbot from Answering Questions About 2024 Election

Google has restricted its Gemini chatbot from answering questions about elections globally, including the 2024 US presidential election. This is out of an "abundance of caution."

Gemini will respond to election-related questions saying it is "still learning" and direct users to regular Google Search.

Not all election questions are blocked, but Google did not provide specifics on what is allowed.

This restriction was previously announced in December 2023 when the chatbot was still called Bard.

Gemini has improved over recent months, but also drawn criticism over failures to preserve historical context in images. Google has disabled that feature for now.
