Google Slows Pixel Watch Charging to Improve Battery Health
- Original Pixel Watch now takes 15 mins longer to fully charge than before
- Slower charging can help ensure good long-term battery health
- Previously, Pixel Watch could go from 0% to 50% in 30 mins, 80% in 55 mins, 100% in 80 mins
- Now takes 45 mins to get to 50%, 75 mins to 80%, 110 mins to 100%
- While fast charging is convenient, it's not best for your device
- Google likely slowed charging to protect the Watch
- There were reports of Pixel Watch backplate randomly falling off and overheating during charging
- Wireless charging generates a lot of heat which can damage device and battery
- Slower charging prevents overheating which caused backplate issues
- Firmware update only applies to original Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2 still charges fast
- Pixel Watch 2 uses pin charging which doesn't get as hot
