Google Restructures AI Ethics Team, Future Uncertain
-
Google's internal AI ethics watchdog team, RESIN, has lost its leader Jen Gennai and is being restructured. Some of its work will move to the trust and safety team.
-
RESIN conducted over 500 reviews last year of AI projects like Bard chatbot to ensure compatibility with Google's AI principles.
-
It's unclear how RESIN's responsibilities for reviewing AI projects will be handled after the restructuring. Some employees haven't been told.
-
The changes bring "responsible innovation work to the center of trust and safety efforts" to strengthen it, says a Google spokesperson.
-
Gennai helped author Google's AI principles which state Google won't use AI for weapons or human rights violations. She and another key member, Sara Tangdall, have left their roles.
