Canadian Government Backs Amended Motion Calling for Two-State Solution, Ceasefire in Israel-Palestine Conflict
-
The Liberal government endorsed an amended NDP motion calling for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. The motion no longer calls for Canada to unilaterally recognize Palestinian statehood.
-
The amended motion calls for an immediate ceasefire, for Hamas to lay down arms, and for Canada to cease approving arms exports to Israel. It also maintains funding for a UN aid agency while calling for reforms.
-
Some Liberal MPs criticized the motion, saying it creates a false equivalency between Israel and Hamas and rewards the terrorist group. MP Anthony Housefather said he would reflect on whether he can remain part of the Liberal caucus.
-
Jewish groups criticized the motion even after amendments, while Muslim groups welcomed it as a historic vote in favor of Palestinian rights.
-
The motion passed with support from the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois. Only the Conservatives and a handful of Liberal MPs voted against it.
