Hochul Awards Over 1,700MW of Offshore Wind Energy to Power 1M Homes, Create 800 Jobs, Cut Emissions

Governor Hochul announced awards for 2 offshore wind projects - Empire Wind 1 (810MW) and Sunrise Wind (924MW) - which will provide over 1,700MW of clean energy by 2026.

The projects are expected to create over 800 near-term construction jobs and invest $2 billion in economic development, with commitments to support disadvantaged communities.

The wind projects will help power 1 million NY homes and deliver approx. 10% of NYC and Long Island's electricity needs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 3 million metric tons annually.

The projects will invest over $80 million in wind infrastructure at the Port of Coeymans and over $300 million in electric grid infrastructure on Long Island and related transmission investments.

The weighted average cost of the awarded projects is $150.15 per megawatt-hour, delivering benefits aligned with Climate Act goals while minimizing costs to customers.
