Hardware Hacker Gets GTA: Vice City Running on a Router Using Custom eGPU Setup
- Hardware hacker KittenLabs got GTA Vice City running on a TP-Link TL-WDR4900 router using a custom miniPCIe breakout PCB to connect an AMD Radeon HD 7470 eGPU
- The router's NXP QorIQ P1014 CPU is actually a PowerPC e500v2 32bit processor capable of running a custom Linux gaming platform
- Initial experiments with an RX 570 GPU failed due to incompatibility, but the legacy 7470 card worked well
- Getting Vice City to run required a reverse-engineered open source version compiled for the platform, with graphic fixes needed in Mesa 3D
- KittenLabs has documented other creative hacks on their blog like an analog floppy drive-based music synthesizer
