Sony Embraces PC for Live Service Games, Remains Cautious on Big Single-Player Exclusives
-
Helldivers 2 has done very well on Steam, hitting 155k peak concurrent players on launch day, much higher than other Sony ports like God of War. This was an experiment for Sony.
-
Going forward, big PlayStation exclusive single-player games will still launch first on PS5, then come to PC 1-2 years later with a shrinking gap between releases.
-
However, Sony's planned live service games will likely launch on both PlayStation and PC on the same day given the need for higher player counts. This includes new IPs and existing multiplayer franchises.
-
While not fully committing to Xbox-style day-and-date PC releases across the board, Sony will rely more heavily on simultaneous PlayStation and PC launches for its live service games while remaining somewhat flexible with traditional single-player exclusives too.
-
Sony has essentially already stated in 2022 that most live service games will launch right away on PC, while single-player exclusives will be held back by at least a year.
