Household spending power triples since 2011, but inequality persists

Spending power has nearly tripled since 2011-12. Monthly spending is now Rs 6,521 in urban areas and Rs 3,860 in rural areas.

Rural-urban spending gaps are declining. Urban spending used to be 76% higher than rural in 1999-2000, but is now only 68.9% higher.

Food spending is declining as a share of total spending, especially in rural areas. It's now 46.38% of rural spending vs 53% in 2011-12.

There is a 10x gap between the monthly spending of the top 5% and bottom 5% of households.
