Minimum wage hikes take effect in over 20 states to start 2023

At least 22 states and 40+ cities/counties are raising their minimum wages on January 1st or later in 2023. The increases are due to scheduled hikes or automatic inflation adjustments.

7 states plus Washington D.C. will have $15 minimum wages or higher starting January 1st. Washington state will have the highest at $16.28 per hour.

Hawaii has the biggest minimum wage jump - increasing by $2 to $14 per hour. Some states like Nevada and Oregon have hikes taking effect July 1st.

Many city and county minimum wages eclipse state rates. Highest in the country will be Tukwila, WA at $20.29 per hour starting January 1st.

The federal minimum wage remains unchanged at $7.25 per hour since 2009. 20 states still adhere to this rate, but local pushes for higher wages continue.
