Report: China Subsidizes Fentanyl Precursors, Undermines US Efforts to Combat Crisis
• China provides tax rebates for companies that manufacture fentanyl precursors and other synthetic drugs, as long as those companies sell them outside of China. This subsidizes and fuels the fentanyl crisis in the U.S.
• China has thwarted U.S. investigations into illicit fentanyl manufacturers by warning targets of investigations when formal assistance requests are made.
• Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr said evidence suggests China is "knee deep" in sponsoring and facilitating the export of fentanyl precursors.
• Chinese companies are currently selling synthetic opioids openly on their websites. There are hundreds of solicitations that need to be taken down immediately.
• The report calls on the U.S. to impose financial sanctions on those involved in illicit fentanyl trade and to form an interagency task force focused on the opioid crisis reporting directly to the President and Attorney General.
