India and Bangladesh Resolve Decades-Old Border Issues through Historic Land Swap Pact
-
India and Bangladesh signed a Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) in 2015 to resolve border issues stemming from the 1947 partition.
-
The pact swapped 162 enclaves - India received 51 enclaves equalling 7,110 acres of land from Bangladesh and transferred 111 enclaves about 17,160 acres to Bangladesh.
-
Over 14,000 residents in 51 Bangladesh enclaves in India were granted Indian citizenship. About 36,000 residents in Indian enclaves in Bangladesh opted for Bangladeshi nationality.
-
The agreement ended the decades-long stateless status of about 50,000 enclave dwellers who finally got access to basic services.
-
The pact was signed under PM Modi, who called it "historic" as it resolved a border issue pending since independence.
