Greene Files Motion to Remove House Speaker Johnson Over Spending Bill Dispute
-
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has filed a "motion to vacate the chair" (MTV) to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson. If successful, it could threaten Johnson's political future.
-
Greene was angered that Johnson ignored House rules and made concessions to Democrats to avoid a government shutdown. Only 101 Republicans supported the spending bill.
-
Greene has not yet forced a vote on her measure, but any House member could seize it and compel one. It's not clear Johnson has the votes to defeat an uprising.
-
A similar 2015 MTV effort by Rep. Mark Meadows preceded Speaker Boehner's resignation. Rep. Matt Gaetz's 2023 MTV preceded Kevin McCarthy's ouster as Speaker.
-
Johnson's razor-thin GOP majority leaves him vulnerable. Losing just a couple votes on any given day could endanger his speakership.
