AI Event Sparks Concerns of Overeager Embrace of Automation Over Human Judgment
-
I attended a Microsoft event on AI and journalism, expecting an intellectual discussion but instead witnessed AI capitulism from some attendees who seemed to worship AI's talents over their own.
-
One journalist predicted that generative AI would be involved in every part of the news process from ideation to editing, essentially replacing human roles.
-
Another attendee claimed that AI models are more talented than he is because they contain all text from history, which I found concerning rather than a fact to proudly admit.
-
I worried that AI enthusiasm was leading people to undervalue their own abilities and cede too much ground to AI without enough critical thinking.

While AI brings risks, it also represents an opportunity for us to create new beneficial applications, so we shouldn't just fatalistically assume AI will dominate but rather focus on how we can best leverage it.
