Türkiye Plans Major Gas and Nuclear Expansion to Become Regional Energy Hub

Türkiye plans to expand gas infrastructure to establish a gas exchange hub that can facilitate Russian gas transit to Europe. This comes as Russia proposed a gas hub in Türkiye to replace lost European sales after invading Ukraine.

Türkiye aims to expand gas infrastructure in Thrace region, connecting LNG terminals, storage and pipelines, so gas from Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia can feed into the hub.

Iraq's northern oil export pipeline through Türkiye will soon resume operations after maintenance and flood damage repairs are completed.

Türkiye is in negotiations with Russia, China and South Korea to construct a second nuclear power plant in Thrace region. Talks also continue with Russia on a third plant.

Türkiye aims for 20GW nuclear energy capacity in the future as part of clean energy transition plans, and seeks to establish broader nuclear ecosystem.
