India's wealth gap widens to British Raj levels as top 1% holds over 40% of national wealth
- India now more unequal in wealth distribution than during British Raj; top 1% holds over 40% of national wealth
- Top 1% income share jumped to 22.6% in 2022-23, among highest in the world
- Inequality declined after independence until early 1980s, then began rising and skyrocketed since early 2000s
- Tax system seen as regressive from wealth perspective; restructuring tax code and public investments in health, education etc. needed
- Super tax of 2% on richest 167 families could yield 0.5% of national income
