McCarthy Bids Farewell to Congress After 17 Years, Vows to Help Republicans Regain House Majority
-
McCarthy bid farewell to Congress on Thursday, his last day as a member after serving 17 years. He called it "bittersweet" that his speakership dream ended after just 9 months.
-
McCarthy worked his way up the ranks over the years and helped the GOP regain the House majority, before losing the speakership in October.
-
Fellow California Republicans gave tributes to McCarthy on the House floor. Rep. Patrick McHenry called him the "legislative equivalent of an elite power athlete."
-
McCarthy didn't rule out a future government role or position in a Trump cabinet. He plans to help Republicans win the House in 2024.
-
Despite the ups and downs, McCarthy said he "loved every minute, good or bad" of serving in Congress over 17 years. He heads back to California though his options there are limited.
