UK MP Proposes Military Conscription for Unemployed Youth and Offenders
-
Richard Drax, a Conservative MP and former Army captain, suggests young unemployed people who turn down several job offers should be conscripted into the military for 2 years.
-
Drax argues many young people today are "not prepared to contribute to our country" through military service.
-
Over 9 million working-age people in the UK have dropped out of the job market, with at least 5 million claiming benefits.
-
Drax also proposes offenders could have sentences shortened for good behavior if they agree to serve in the Armed Forces.
-
Drax points to the war in Ukraine and the shrinking size of the British Army as reasons to bolster troop numbers, including through conscription if necessary.
