US, China Military Leaders Hold First Call Since July in Bid to Reduce Tensions
-
Top US military officer Gen. Charles Brown held a video call with Chinese counterpart Gen. Liu Zhenli, the first high-level military communication since July 2022.
-
The call comes after President Biden and Chinese President Xi agreed in November to resume communication between the countries.
-
The call is meant to ensure "competition does not spiral into conflict" between the US and China, according to US officials.
-
China does not currently have an official defense minister after the previous one was removed by President Xi.
-
There have been no recent incidents of Chinese jets buzzing American planes since the Biden-Xi meeting, after the Pentagon released videos earlier this year of risky Chinese aerial maneuvers.
