Navalny's Whereabouts Unknown; Rights Groups Alarmed Over Opposition Leader's Potential Enforced Disappearance
-
Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny has been moved from his penal colony, and his lawyers have not seen him since December 6th. His current location is unknown.
-
Navalny was already serving over 11 years on various charges. In August, he was sentenced to an additional 19 years in prison.
-
Kremlin spokesperson Peskov said the Kremlin has "no information" about Navalny's fate, and claimed Russia has no "capacity, right, or desire" to track prisoners.
-
Rights groups like Amnesty International have expressed grave concern, saying Navalny may have been subjected to an "enforced disappearance" which violates his rights.
-
The EU and US have also called for Navalny's immediate release from what they call his "politically motivated incarceration." Russia calls any foreign intervention "unacceptable."
