Butler Appointed to Feinstein's Seat, But Won't Run in 2024 as All Eyes Turn to Wide Open Race

Laphonza Butler was appointed by Governor Newsom to fill Senator Feinstein's vacant seat, but will not run for a full term in 2024.

Butler said she realized "this is not the greatest use of my voice" and wants to be "the loudest, proudest champion of California" during her remaining 383 days.

She has never held elected office before and spent nearly 20 years at SEIU leading home care workers.

Several high-profile Democrats are already running, including 3 House members and former MLB player Steve Garvey.

The 2024 race for Feinstein's Senate seat is now wide open without an incumbent running for re-election.
