Massachusetts Sees Mixed Changes in Jobs and Unemployment in January

Local unemployment rates increased in 23 labor market areas in Massachusetts and remained unchanged in 1 area in January 2024 compared to December 2023.

Compared to January 2023, unemployment rates were down in 24 labor market areas.

Of the 15 published employment estimates areas, all 15 lost jobs compared to the previous month, with the largest decreases in Brockton-Bridgewater-Easton (-3.5%), Leominster-Gardner (-3%), and Barnstable Town (-2.3%).

From January 2023 to January 2024, 11 areas gained jobs, with the biggest increases in Barnstable Town (+5.7%), Lynn-Saugus-Marblehead (+3.2%), and Pittsfield (+1.8%).

The statewide seasonally adjusted preliminary jobs estimate showed an increase of 18,300 jobs in January 2024 and a year-over-year gain of 25,800 jobs.
