Expert Warns Cyberattacks Increasing as Prosecutions Remain Rare
• Law professor Carl Szabo warned that cyberattacks will continue to increase as the government fails to prosecute the vast majority of them. He said less than 0.05% of cyberattacks lead to prosecution.
• Recent outages at AT&T and pharmacies across the U.S. due to an attack on Change Healthcare highlight the threat of cyberattacks. Szabo called on law enforcement to do more.
• Szabo said it takes about 280 days on average to trace cyberattacks. He pointed to past attacks on Sony, Colonial Pipeline, and hospitals as evidence these threats are ongoing.
• Szabo recommended people secure personal emails, use unique passwords, and enable two-factor authentication to protect themselves.
• America needs to maintain technological dominance globally to combat cyber threats, Szabo argued. He warned against giving up U.S. technological independence.
