Congress Pauses Space Command HQ Construction Pending Review of Colorado Selection
• Congress inserted an amendment to the NDAA that restricts the Defense Department from building out Space Command headquarters in Colorado until June 30 pending an independent review.
• The amendment is a policy win for Alabama lawmakers who argue their state was wrongly removed as the original HQ site by the Biden administration.
• The amendment prohibits the Pentagon from acquiring, constructing, planning or designing a new HQ building until the Pentagon IG and U.S. Comptroller complete a review of the HQ selection process.
• President Biden decided to keep Space Command HQ in Colorado Springs, overruling Trump’s plan to eventually relocate it to Huntsville, Alabama.
• Alabama lawmakers accused the Biden administration of political motivation in the HQ decision, alleging it was partly based on Alabama's restrictive abortion laws.
